Mrs Snodgrass Responds

"Dear Mr Mews.  I am oddly flattered by your persistence and eccentric character.  I might say it's been a long time since a gentleman has showed interest in my company.  I am intrigued and I will accept your invitation for dinner with one request; I would prefer that this Quigley character not attend as I find his beady eyes and his constant chatter disagreeable.  Yours, Constance Snodgrass."

Mr Mews Doesn't Take No For An Answer

Hello?  Anyone home?

Sounds like footsteps.

Are you at home Mrs Snodgrass?

That Mews again.  He's really becoming a thorn in my side...

Mr Mews Gives Mrs Snodgrass One Last Chance

"Dear Mrs. Snodgrass.  I don't mean to be a bother, and please understand that if I don't hear from you after this third and final attempt to engage you, I shall resign from my efforts to meet with you.  I hope you don't view my persistence as untoward but as eager to make your acquaintance.  Yours, Mr Mews."
There.  That should do it.

Now to address the envelope-

C'est fini.

Mr Mews Explains the Weather

"Yes, I think it's going to be a wet, cold winter here in the Pacific Northwest Quigs," Mews states overlooking the courtyard.  "It's already quite blustery out.  Quigs, did you know that El Nina is Spanish for The Nina?"

"You're quite the comic, Mews.  Feeling a little jaunty today?  I don't know, this El Nino and El Nina business gets me terribly confused Mews," Quigley says over a mid afternoon huckleberry scone.

"Yes, it can be a little confounding.  Looks like we're in a La Nina cycle now which generally means there are cooler than normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.  The mid western and south eastern United States usually becomes drier and warmer, but the Pacific Northwest gets..."

"Colder and wetter, yes.  Drats.  Perhaps.  I should migrate to Florida for the winter Mews."

"And leave me here to fend for myself on these cold winter nights?  I'll have none of that talk Quigley!"

Mews Muses Over Family Portraits

"The likeness is quite remarkable Mews," Quigley says sipping some Earl Grey tea.

"Yes, Mews said without hesitation.  "It's quite uncanny how much I resemble Grandpapa Mews," he said with a sparkle in his eye.  "You know, Grandpapa always had a flair for words.  He knew just what to say and when to say it.  Perhaps I should conjure up Papa when I next approach Mrs. Snodgrass."

"Are you still hung up on that priss?  You've invited her twice for dinner and still no response."

"Yes, but this time I shall make the invitation a little more, let's say, irresistible."

Mr Mews Grows Nostalgic

"Oh hello.  You caught me in a reverie.  I was rummaging through my closet looking for a London Fog raincoat and I came across this old box of Harry Whittier Frees books that I enjoyed in my youth.  If you don't mind, I think I'll return to my nostalgia.  It seems like it was a simpler time, but was it?"

The President Visits Portland

Horst certainly does get around.  With his press pass he was able to make his way around the tarmac and scramble up the stairs of Air Force One before he was shooed away into the area designated for local journalists.  He says the photos were worth the chastising he got from secret service.

Quigley Returns From His Travels To A Country Divided

"Quigs, I must say things have been off in your absence.  And I also have to say that I've been a bit of a hermit.  I forget how much of a force you are in my life my good friend.  I do believe if it were not for you I might just regress into a permanent state of ennui and wistfulness."

"Mais no, Mews!  It is you that inspires me!  If it were not for your clear mindedness and rational demeanor I'd have become a flinty old malcontent years ago.   Because of you I am able to have a civil conversation with my social and political rivals without pecking their eyes out!  Flight, as you know, gives me a much needed new perspective.  Everyone looks quite the same at a few hundred feet especially when you can't hear the trifle bickering and name-calling."

"Perhaps we provide a perfect balance for each other Quigs.  Like an exceptional wine-neither too acidic nor too sweet.  Now, tell me about your trip to La Tour Eiffel."

Mews Winterizes His Home

"Yes, hello, Mews here.  Just doing a little assessing of the windows before winter sets in.  These old girls have seen better days that's for sure.  The Portland rain really does a number on our wood and our brick here.  Still, the old building's keeping up."

Better hope for a mild winter.

And yes, I'd better keep my eye on this grout here.

Meet the Rent a Goats

You eat that weed, I'll take this one
Mr Mews met some goats last week on an evening stroll.  While they couldn't really be interrupted during their dinner (those four chambered stomachs are constantly growling), they did pose for some nice photos.  These goats are from Goat Rental NW and they have a full time job chowing down overgrown urban lots. Apparently they seem to be happy to get off the farm every now and then to see the city sights!

Earning my keep.
Did you say hay?
The grass looks greener on the other side.
The grass is greener on the other side!
Pan would be jealous of these horns.
My mother was part terrier.
Finally, a job where I don't have to shave my goatee.
The End

Quigley Sends His Greetings From the North Country

"Quigley here with Herr Gnome and an exceptionally happy bear.  We just had burgers and beer and I'm getting a little sun in before I jet off to my next destination.  I think I may spend a little time traveling in California-I do say it's been ages since I've been snorkeling."

Waiting For Quigley

"Oh dear, I do hope that this wait for Quigley doesn't end up like the end of 'Waiting for Godot.'  Not only would that be tragic, it would be an infernal bore.  No, I hear that Quigley is somewhere in the north country and I shall await patiently his next report.  After all, tis my nature to be patient.  Perhaps Vladimir and Estragon simply did not wait long enough for Godot!"

Mr Mews Remembers the Blues

"Ah, nature.  Another summer-a short one this year-gone and past.  It makes one a little blue, no?  Especially as I reminisce about the Blue Mountains in eastern Washington.  It's said that Sasquatch inhabits the Blue Mountains and runs free and wild collecting nuts and berries and I daresay the occasional rodent, fish or cat!  Imagine.  A large hairy man beast roaming the verdant slopes.  Next, they'll say that the beast can talk, host dinner parties and sip the finest of wines!"

Aristosphanes the Raven Ambassador Keeps Mews Company

"Good of you to drop in Aristophanes.  As you know Quigley's been traveling down under for some time.  Say, won't you tell me what it's like being an ambassador to the humans?  I wonder if it's not a dreadfully trying occupation?"  Aristophanes bends down then pumps his wings.

"To be honest Mews, it's the most difficult job I've had.  It seems that the bickering and the squawking and the name calling is at an all time high.  I must say just spending an afternoon with a gentleman such as yourself "shooting some hoops," as they say, has me reinvigorated and ready for my flight to Washington."

Quigley's Down Under

"Mews, Quigley here down undeh!  Yes, yes I've been gone longer than I thought.  Yes, I miss our morning philosophical debates as well but I have to say it's been nice to get away.  But look here, I've sent you a photo from Bondi Beach.  Here I am on that rock in the foreground.  Looking forward to seeing you!"

Mews Wins His First Food Contest!

Mr Mews is proud to announce that he beat out several humans in a food contest offered by a new outfit called Portland Food Adventure.  Apparently his pizza reviews were deemed worthy enough to win a certificate for Montreal style bagels from Tastebud Bagel here in Portland and he is most delighted.  "Sometimes these humans get it right once in a while," Mews said this morning over scones and espresso while celebrating his victory.  "A little savoir faire and good taste in this culture of fast food and nasty sound bites seems to still be appreciated once in awhile."

When Mews Met JFK

"Just pouring over some old photos-this is one of my favorites when Jack and I were discussing mid-term elections.  But my goodness, I was a little on the portly side then.  Perhaps I'll spend some more time looking over old photos over the weekend-I'll bet I can find some goodies!"

Plants With Globe Shaped Flowers

"Oh, hello there.  Just musing over bulbs and perennials for fall planting.  But not just any plants.  Plants that have big, round flowers that is.  Not only are they playful and fantastic, but they break up a more traditional perennial garden and add a feeling of tidiness and bright, concentrated color.  Below are some of my favorites that I've gleaned from the September issue of English Garden Magazine.  Time for fall digging!"
Allium, "Lucy Ball"

Dahlia, "Aurora Kiss"
Peony, "Molly the Witch"

Meet Aristosphanes: Raven Ambassador

"This is my friend Aristosphanes. He is a gentleman raven that I had the pleasure of meeting this summer at the Leach Botanical Gardens here in Portland via the Audubon Society.  Apparently, some think it's an unfortunate situation that Aristosphanes has been "imprinted" by humans-meaning that his early bonding years have been defined by humans and not his own kind.  In other words, he prefers the company of humans over ravens.  I take a different approach, and I think that my good raven friend has a great opportunity on his hands to be an ambassador to the greater public.  He likes humans, and actually what's so wrong with that?"
